The Complications

That gap matters more than it sounds. How It Shows Up

Can You Do This Yourself

Some of this is fine to check yourself. You can look at the two springs above the door, if one is stretched with a visible gap in the coil compared to the other, that's your answer, and it's not a DIY fix. Torsion springs are wound under enough tension to break a bone or worse if you don't have the right bars and know how to use them. We don't recommend homeowners touch spring replacement, full stop, regardless of how many videos make it look simple.

What you can safely do yourself: check that the photo-eye sensors near the floor are aligned and the lenses are clean, tighten loose hardware you can reach with the door down and the opener unplugged, and lubricate rollers and hinges with a garage-door-specific lubricant rather than household oil, which attracts grit.

One honest limit on our end, if a door is original to a 1987-era build and the track, rollers, and spring are all failing together, patching one part often isn't worth the labor versus replacing the whole assembly.
